Hi guys, I am posting this for my wife, she has had a frustrating time with this problem.
She's a teacher in a mac lab running os 10.4.2 and fce 4.0.
Students run networked accounts. Software is installed on an image, which is loaded to a server & fired to the target HD.
My students can start a new project, import render, add transitions and export a full size movie, but cannot save and open a project without getting an “unable to open file” message. What gives?
Students can open and play files within the finalcut docs>rendered file folder. Why can I render and export, and have backup files in the rendered file folder, but cannot save and open a project? Is this problem on the image/harddrive, in the network account preferences, in the fce preferences? delgadosensei@gmail.com

Sounds like a Permission problem. Take a look at where they are saving too and see if they have permissions set correctly for that location.

Other than that, no idea. Sounds like an OS issue rather than a FCE issue to me.

Keep us posted.

Agree with martinX. It sounds like a permissions problem. Have her talk to her computer administrator.
I teach FC at a local college and they have it set-up to use a separate partition. The system partition is locked off at all times but it doesn't stop students from accidentally starting projects on it.
Its def a perm problem.
