my backpack broke today and my powerbook fell out. Fortunately, it is still functioning properly, but the back of the monitor has been affected. The top cover (over the monitor) is coming off near the base. It has been bent and there is a small wire coming out of the bottom. In addition, the latch is no longer functioning. Other than aesthetic losses elsewhere, this is the only major damage. Does anyone have any recommendations? I was told my university apple specialist that it would end up being $700+ to replace. Does this sound right? Will Applecare insurance cover this?? If no, can anyone tell me where to find an insurance that would cover accidental damage/theft? Thank you!!

Nope Apple Care does not cover user abuse.

And it's too late to get it covered under any insurance, but possible your homeowners policy.

But that can get your homeowners policy pushed into non-renewal, putting people's mortgages at risk.

Now if you're thinking about getting a new policy, we frown on insurance fraud here.

thanks for the info. The insurance would be for future laptop usage...its my own fault that I wasn't familiar enough with the Apple car policy this time around. I need to find an insurer for my laptop post-repair so this won't happen again...
