Hi,

This is how my girlfriends macbook looks like you can see in the image below.

What is this problem and how can it be solved?

It a MBP 2011 running Mavericks since yesterday..

Any help will be appreciated

Is the language and region set properly in Preferences > Language & Region?

font issue

Can you open Font Book and under the Edit menu, run Check for Duplicate enabled fonts? That looks like one of the system fonts is missing or corrupt.
A reinstall of Mavericks should (may) fix it too.
Another trouble-shooting item, delete the fonts cache, Onyx can do that easily.

Looks like you got missing fonts.

I suggest you download and install Pacificist and use it to extract the Fonts folder in the Mavericks installer and reinstall those fonts.
