I am upgrading my 13" MacBook Air (i7, 256SSD, 8 GB RAM, mid 2012) to a 13" MacBook Pro Retina (i7, 512GB SSD, 16GB RAM) which is schedule to arrive late Wednesday. I recently purchased an LG Blu-ray burner with a USB 3 connection to my MBA. I primarily use my optical drive for ripping CD music (I have ~400 music CDs, most already ripped), and rarely use it for ripping Blu-ray or DVD movies. I was very disappointed in the rip speed via iTunes on my MBA which started out around 6x, and ended slightly under 10x. It took nearly 10 minutes to rip a CD disc. When using my old Windows 7 PC (optical drives connected via internal SATA connections), it starts out ripping at 8x and ends around 35x-40x. On the Windows PC, it take about 3-4 minutes to rip. The LG external BR drive is rated at 48x for reading CD-ROM, and had positive reviews for connecting to both Mac and PC. Is this expected rip speed for connecting an optical drive to a Mac? Is there a setting or recommended optical drive that will provide me fast ripping time for a music CDs? The LG BR Drive was recognize with OS X 10.9.4 and mounted all three optical disc types, (Blu-Ray, DVD and CD).

I appreciate any tips or external optical drive recommendations forum members can provide me.

Thanks,
Dave
