A friend's just written to me with a strange system problem, whereby applications become completely unresponsive and then appear distorted and mirrored when Exposé'd - see attached screenshot.

Is this a known problem, and if so, does anyone know of a fix?

Thanks Zwhaler. I've asked him to do so, but for the moment, let's work on the reasonable assumption that repairing permissions will have absolutely no effect. ;)

A faulty video card, maybe?

Good call, but that wouldn't explain the non-responsiveness that accompanies the Exposé problem.

is he using some sort of theme app like shapeshifter?

I wondered this as well, and I've asked the question. I'll update the thread tomorrow once I've heard back from my friend.

Thanks to all for your responses so far.

Update: My friend doesn't have ShapeShifter or any other UI hack installed.

Does anyone have any further ideas?

Probably not, but has your friend installed Deeper? Because that has an option for altering the Exposé settings for 'show desktop', inasmuch as the windows no longer fly to the outer reaches of the display, but instead shrink down together into a thumbnail of their former arrangement in the corner of the desktop. This is pretty cool (but probably pretty useless), but the developer does warn that having this setting on might cause problems with areas of the screen and Exposé.

Thanks Richard, that sounds like a possible explanation. I'll pass on your comments.
