Help needed with playing songs on itunes

I just got a new computer and had to put all the songs on it into itunes off my ipod, I've mangaged to do that and put all of the music in my itunes library. But when I click on a song to play it, no sound is produced. Itunes indicates that the song is playing and the volume is turned up so I can't understand why there is no sound? Any suggesstions?

Is there audio output from other applications that you use ?

yeh, everything else i've used has had an auido output.
