looking for help in setting up the best network configuration for my new iMac amongst my other devices, and also ensure I have access to key files / media etc from my 2008 iMac....as we'll as a central storage / server for a family of Apple devices (new iMac retina, old iMac, Mac mini..used for home theatre.., Mac book, iPads, iPhones etc..)and the odd windows machine..... Sorry if this is in the wrong place, but as it includes my IMac ...thought a good place to start.....
I-Mac Retina......in hindsight, I should have perhaps used migration assistant when I set up my new Mac to transfer everything from my old iMac (2008) but I have now been using my new iMac for a while so unless I copy all media to a separate hard drive and import later, this doesn't seem a good option after the fact.
So I have started thinking about putting all the files and media on to an external drive ( I have a 2TB seagate backup, and 4TB wd my book) and then perhaps creating a central server that can be accessed by all machines and especially for media ( either via I tunes , or perhaps plex)
my house will also be cat6 wired so plenty of wireless or wireline connection options.
I have backed up my old 2008 iMac to time machine on my apple time capsule router. Now I need to transfer data from my old 2008 iMac ( and other MacBooks...) so that I can clean the old 2008 iMac for my kids to use, and then have all machines able to access a central storage for files and media etc, as well as have a pcemtral place to save files/media to etc.
I am sure I can't be the first person to have embarked on this challenge, and would welcome all and any advice as to how to proceed from here.
Cheers
