My brother got his macbook last november or december. He woke up this morning after leaving it on all night, to a gray screen which he interpreted to me, said "File directory "Andrew *******" does not exist" (or something along the lines of that. He held in the power button to restart four times until he got to the "Loading Mac OS X" screen, then nothing. He's on the phone with AppleCare now. Anything I can do in the meantime?

AppleCare said to reinstall OS X. My brother tried it and eventually, after 30 minutes, he sees "An error has occurred, try reinstaling." Any ideas?
