ok, here's the deal. my wife's company is in the process of having a site put together and the movies on her site won't transfer/play as quickly as the same exact file on a different hosting service. ( our site creator has posted the file on both places to compare). the hosting packages are basically the same...shared hosting...nothing fancy.

so why would one site consistently transfer at roughly 90KB/sec vs. the other at 200KB/sec? we've e-mailed tech support at the slower site and they replied that it's an issue with our dsl connection. this seems impossible since our site guy is experiencing the same issue and he's in new york and we're in los angeles...we're not on the same high speed connection.

i think the tech support guy is fudging things a bit but i don't know enough to call "bs" on the whole thing...and i'm not sure if our site guy has the experience to smell the " bs" i'm smelling...

anyone have an educated opinion on this? you're input would be geatly appreciated.

They are either
a) overselling their shared server
or
b) have a very slow connection
or both

Just terminate your contract with them and go for someone else. Remember, you get what you pay for. The most important thing for begginers and semi-pros I think is customer support. Generally speaking, places that offer $5 - $10 monthly are going to be overselling and won't offer you the support that others charging higher rates would. And if it's for your business, then would $30 - $40 a month be too much? I don't think so.
Of course, you could get lucky with a few cheap hosts, but the current one you're using sounds aweful! How can they blame your dsl connection! 90KB/s is very slow.

BTW, who is the host?

Hold on their chief. These are not the only answers. It may very well be the DSL connection causing the problem. Before anyone goes canceling contracts make sure that isn't the case.

You need to look at the traceroutes. Plain and simple.

What could be happening -->
1) DSL is crap
2) "Slow" host is on anyone's line but the DSL provider
3) "Fast" host is on the DSL provider's lines

This could easily show the results you're seeing. This situation seems to find itself happening more and more when the "fast" host is the DSL provider or their affiliate and the "slow" host is a competitor.

junior is probably right.... but never trust your DSL/Cable provider. They are one small step above an oil company. Check it out first.

I didn't consider DSL to be at fault because he mentioned that the guy designing the site was on a different connection from a different city and he still had the same problem. I think that's reasonable evidence that the host is at fault.

many thanks for the replies...i feel like i'm back in school.

my theory is that the server was over-shared...the transfer results were the same regardless of whether we were accessing the visuals from charter cable, SBC, the site guy's connection in N.Y. or our clients in toronto.

interestingly enough, after we inquired about the differences in speed, the visuals jumped up to match the 200KB/sec rate of the other server. i can only guess that they moved us to a less-shared server...if thats possible. like i said, i'm very new to this stuff.

and i guess i could of been more specific when i said it was nothing fancy. that was a relative assessment compared to some of my friend's sites. we're paying $68.00/month because we need lots of storage and bandwidth. i don't want to name the host until things are fully resolved and this new transfer speed stays constant for a week or so( or not...).

thanks again.
