I have an iMac Pro (2017). 3.2GHz Xeon W, 32GB, 1TB SSD.

Should boot like a daemon (no pun intended). And it used to. But a few weeks ago something happened. I can't pinpoint any one change that caused it, but now when booting, after a few seconds the progress bar just freezes about 80% of the way through for a few minutes. The system eventually boots and everything seems to run fine, but needless to say it's annoying!

Here is the system log from the boot. The freezing happens at 22:38, but I can't figure out from the log what it causing it. I'm suspecting it has something to do with the two errors with displaypolicyd, but really don't know what the next step is. I am trying not to have to do a clean reinstall, but I may have to resort to it.

Any help or clues are greatly appreciated!!!

There can be a lot of causes for a slow boot. Startup items that can't connect to the internet. Virus scans. Kernel extensions. Launch agents & daemons (for system and user). Hardware issues.

I would first remove/disable any startup apps that are associated with the login user's account.

If that doesn't help you can run etrecheck to look at extensions, agents and daemons for both system and user that are loaded at boot time. Copy and remove any that are not part of the base system. Reboot. If back to normal add back the removed extensions/agents/daemons until you find the one(s) that cause the problem.

WARNING: make sure you know what you are doing when you disable extensions, agents and daemons. You can damage your system, lose access to devices if not done properly.

Thanks HDFan and chown33 for the reply!

I will definitely look into EtreCheck to see if it gives any clues.

A few other things I forgot to mention:

- I *think* it has nothing to do with the User directory since I turned off auto-login, and the delay still occurred before getting to the user login screen.

- I am slightly UNIX literate, so I did try (temporarily) moving everything out of Library/LaunchAgents and LaunchDaemons, but that didn't help either.

- I tried booting to safe mode, but it actually froze and never completed the boot process

That's something to look into further.

I'd be looking into booting from an external drive. If you don't have one, or don't have a bootable backup, then things will be more difficult.

I'd also disconnect any connected peripheral or secondary device that wasn't needed in a minimal configuration.

Thanks again for your help so far.

Getting a little bit closer to figuring it out I think - although I still can't pinpoint exactly what's going wrong. I think some process during the boot is taking over 100% of the CPU causing everything else to crawl for a while. Now to figure out what process it is!

When I check in console, there's a System Report generated at the time that the progress bar just freezes. I've also attached the part of the boot log that is written around 00:21"13, which is when the report claims the hogging process starts.

Any help deciphering this is greatly appreciated!
