Help Please with Snow Leopard

I upgraded to snow leopard about 4 weeks ago on my Macbook and Imac.

2 weeks after my sound stopped working on my Macbook. 1 week after that my sound stopped working on my imac.

Scanning does not work on my HP 2840, or on preview or image capture it cannot see the device although printing works fine. I am at the ned of my rope with this release

Did you check inside sound preferences?

System Preferences->Sound->Output
You have internal speakers selected?

As for your printer
HP 2840,its never going to scan.

Compatible printers for 10.6 ,it states it has only has print drivers for that printer,no scan drivers.
