Help Podcast in danger

To cut a long story short iTunes 5 imports wav files really badly and they sound rubbish and i need to convert my wav files into aac or mp3 with an application thats free any ideas?

yeah, that really annoyed me, even about itunes 4.x was ****** .wav importing...
