Help: Power/batt management screwy

i'm running a 433mhz iBook, system 10.2.6. i swapped out the HD a while ago, but lost the new drive to the blackout. when i swapped in the old drive, i started experiencing battery probs; namely, no matter how low i let the charge get, or how long i leave it charging, it never charges above 56% or so.

help?

Drain the battery (leave the comp on) till the point where the machine has to put itself to sleep. This is Apple recommended, so no worries =)
