Ok, so here's the summary of the problem:
-all image files (from .jpg to .tff) began opening in ColorSync
-Preview was not recognized as a "recommended app" for these files.
-when forced to select Preview (in get info pane), it worked fine, BUT:
-when selected "apply to all", the icon for any fily type (.pdf, .jpg, ...) went to a "blank paper" icon, but still opened with Preview.

This is bothering me to no end.

I tried trashing prefs, and restarting with no effect.

So, does anyone know how to fix this? Or does anyone know how I can reinstall Preview from the Tiger disk?

I'm running a G5 with 10.4.1.

Thanks in advance.

EDIT: Made a new user, no problems with Preview. What does that mean and how do I fix it for my login?

Here's how to fix this:

step 1: go to user's library and remove launchservices.plist
step 2: go to system's library, then caches and remove any and all launchservices files
step 3: reboot
step 4: ...
step 5: profit.
