Im EVERYWHERE!
Hey!
I have a big problem,
I had important info that i wrote on some stickies a long time ago in class and they are part of dashboard not desktop. Anyway's, today i went to look at them and half of them (3 notes) were blank and color was changed. I know the info was there yesterday so im wondering if timemachine backed them up so how or if theres anyway to get the info that was written on them back?? i have no idea how they seemed to randomly delete their txt but there in the same position so im not sure if theres a way to recover since the note itself wasnt deleted. Please let me know if you have any idea on how to get this back and how to extract the actually content back onto the notes. THANK YOU GUYS! :):apple:

Sorry, there's no guarantee with the Stickies app in dashboard. It doesnt save anywhere to disk that I'm aware of.

If you're taking lots of important notes, best to write them down in an app where you can save.

(technically, i'm sure it does save to disk, but its probably only holding the current contents of the stickies. if it doesnt show up in dashboard, its likely not on disk)

The text is stored inside the following preference file Users/username/Library/Preferences/widget-com.apple.widget.stickies.plist

So if you have a backup of that you can get the text out again

You helped another...can u help me?

My 2 lost Stickies are not part of Dashboard, just a regular app. But, I found a preference called something like Users/username/Library/Preferences/.comStickies. Can't give you the exact name at this moment.

In any case, could this be the file I might go to to recover lost Stickies? If so, HOW? If I double click, it asks me what application I want to use to open it. How does one recover data from a preferences file?

In other words....desperate, and not knowledgeable about this kind of stuff at all. Would GREATLY appreciate advice.

Cheers.

The file /Users/username/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Stickies.plist does not contain the data that is inside the sticky.

You need to look for this file /Users/username/Library/StickiesDatabase.

Double clicking on that file should open in textedit. There may be lots of rubbish all over that file but as seen in the example below the data can be extracted from it (assuming it is there). It will take some manual digging around but hopefully you can get the data you need :)
