Help regarding external drives.

Hi. I currently have two 500gb USB and one 1Tb FW800 drives connected to my 24" intel imac. Very often whilst using safari I will click on a web page, my external drives will spin up causing safari to pause, then the web page will load. Anyway to stop this VERY annoying little quirk without ejecting the drives would be most appreciated.
