I'm trying to install High Sierra on my new Macbook Pro Retina Touch Bar. I've booted with cmd + R, went into Disk Utility and erased the Macintosh HD. I then went to reinstall OS. Install has started and then gone to the circle with a line through it. I tried again and did First Aid in Disk Utility first and no errors were found. It has gotten farther this time but it's giving a crazy 55 hours left or something like that. It has a good strong WiFi connection. I've left it going at work for the night.

Any tips on getting this reinstalled if it's still hung up in the morning?

I would advise getting your hands on another Mac, and create a USB drive with a macOS installer.

Download High Sierra on the Mac, insert a USB drive with at least 8 GB. Rename the drive "Untitled". Capital letter at first.

Then open the application Terminal and run this command:
sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ High\ Sierra.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ macOS\ High\ Sierra.app

Then boot from the USB when it is done. Hold down ALT before the chime. From there you sound like you know how to do it :)

Thank you. Not sure why I didn’t think of installing off of a USB. I do have another Mac that I can use to create the USB.

Why do you think it's having a hard time installing via the download? I haven't seen this before.

Solution:
- Get a copy of the OS installer (the full version)
- Get "Boot Buddy" (free small app from here):
Boot Buddy – sqwarq
- Then use BB on the other Mac to create a bootable USB flash drive version of the installer
- Boot from the installer and use Disk Utility to ERASE the internal drive back to HFS+ with journaling enabled -- NUKE IT!
- NOW try to reinstall High Sierra.

I think you'll find it goes easier this way.

Got it all sorted out. Not sure why I didn't think of that in the first place. Thanks!
