Help - reset iphone problem

Hi!
Half a year ago I jailbroke my phone and have done some meddling and somehow managed to do something to the code. The phone thinks it's on iOS 5 (iPhone 3G) and now when I switch it on it shows a ton of text and a frozen loading symbol. I've tried restoring it but only says 'there was a problem downloading the software for the iPhone "Dom's iPhone". The requested resource was not found"'. Help!!!! I really need THIS phone.

Are you trying to restore from a backup?

If you are trying to restore to the latest version for the iPhone 3G (ios 4.2.1), download the ipsw package from this link: http://appldnld.apple.com/iPhone4/061-9853.20101122.Vfgt5/iPhone1,2_4.2.1_8C148_Restore.ipsw

And on iTunes, hold shift and click restore and select the ipsw package to install and you should be good to go

I think whatever you did makes iTunes want to download a firmware version that doesn't exist
