I added a new number to a 1gen iPhone and I can make voice calls, however the wi-fi is grayed out and I can not use the buttons on the top of the screen. I tried numerous restorals and nothing.

What buttons are you referring to? If you are talking about the Wi-FI/Time/Battery life symbols at the top of the screen- those aren't buttons, just status indicators.

If you are talking about the actual apps on the top part of the screen- it's a hardware issue and you should return it.

Have you connected to an active WiFi signal? Silly question, I know, but your post is a little confusing when you refer to not being able to "use the buttons on the top of the screen".
