Help Restoring iPhone 3G

I want to completely restore a jailbroken and unlocked iPhone 3G. I get the 1015 error. I have tried multiple programs and button patterns, but still get the error at the end of restoring

When I first got it I automatically tried the iTunes restores without putting it into any "mode" which I believe messed it up. I can't get past the iTunes USB screen. Tiny Umbrella said Invalid, under device model. I don't care about restoring firmware from jailbreaks and such. TU only allows me to "exit recovery mode" but as of now my iPhone is inoperable.

Use exit recovery to kick it out of recovery after 1015.

Put the iPhone in pwned DFU mode and restore to a custom firmware 4.2.1.
