Alright, I've got a 10 GB 3rd Gen iPod, which, until now has worked great without a hiccup. I even had iPodLinux running on it for a while...

But I recently decided to remove iPodLinux, as my library was growing and I wasn't using iPodLinux at all. So I removed it...

and the thing hasn't worked since. It used to just freeze at the apple logo; now, however, it displays the lovely folder with exclimation point.

The only way the iPod will mount is when I put it into diagnostic mode and then use disk mode from there. However, on my mac, iPodUpdate doesn't recognize it as an iPod, so it won't reinstall the software (both before & after using Disk Utility to reformat the drive). On the WinXP side, iPodUpdate recognizes it, and sees it doesn't have software; but, after trying to install the software, it says "Can't Unmount iPod". Unplugging the iPod and restarting it send me back to the folder/exclimation point image.

I'm not so sure I want to spend $$$ trying to fix it - so...
(1) Is the genius bar free? I might try that this weekend.
(2) Does anyone think I could use a disk image of the iPod firmware to get it back up and running? I wouldn't know where to find one though...
(3) Are there any other ideas how I could get this up and running again?

I hope I've covered everything I've done to try & get it up and running again, but I'll keep you posted.

Thanks for the help.
