Hi all,

Further to this thread https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/198040/ on s-video etc etc, a new problem has overtaken me. I cannot get a 10-inch monitor to work properly and need some collective advice and new methods to try!

Here’s the situations:

Power Mac G4 (Gigabit Ethernet).

When using a 17-inch LCD screen as the main screen and the 10-inch monitor as the second screen, everything is fine. To originally get the 10-inch screen to work, I had to set it at the correct resolution of 640 x 480 @ 60hz.

Either screen is happy functioning as the main (with menu bar) or as the second, you can swap them about as you wish.

If the 17-inch screen is unplugged, the 10-inch screen continues to work fine. However, if you reboot with just the 10-inch screen in, it gets as far as the grey Apple screen and then goes haywire and a message on the screen comes up saying “unsupported video”. Duh – it is supported – IT WAS WORKING FIVE SECONDS AGO!!!!

If I switch it off, plug the 17-inch screen back in and switch on again, it all works fine. Boots up, no problems. Why won’t it work if just the 10-inch is plugged in?!?!

On the Powerbook G4 (1.67-hi res revision E)

Similar thing here when using clamshell mode. If I use the 10-inch as a second screen, either the laptop screen or the 10-inch can be used as main screen with the menu bar. However, if go to use clamshell mode with the 10-inch as the only active screen, it doesn’t work:

I follow the instructions: plug in a USB keyboad and mouse, plug the power adapter in as normal put the laptop to sleep by closing the lid, plug in the 10-inch screen, press the mouse to awake the computer and lo and behold – the screen goes haywire and says unsupported video”. Again - Duh – it is supported – IT WAS WORKING FIVE SECONDS AGO!!!!

Why won’t the screen work on it’s own? Why does it only work if working with another screen?

I cannot for the life of me figure this out and have searched endlessly for answers but no joy.

Does anybody have any thoughts at all?!
