hey all, Im having a problem. recently my mbp has not been connecting with my network to the internet. everything else connects just fine. my mbp connects just fine to other networks. but when I try to connect it to my network it fails. it says something about having a self assigned ip address. any remedies on how to fix this? thanks

Try connecting your MacBook Pro to the router directly via ethernet. If you still get the same problem try connecting it directly to the modem.
 
If you're getting a 169 ip address, it usually means the cable is not physically connected or doesn't recognize the network speed.

You can rule out a faulty patch cord by replacing it with one you tested and know works.

In System Preferences, Network, Advance, Ethernet, try changing Ethernet settings from auto-detect to manual (configure to match the settings of your router, 10tx,100tx, 1000tx, full/half duplex.

Do you have more detailed infos ? A screen shot ?
Did you configured a IP yourself on purpose ?
If so also check your routing setting and network mask.
Or better: stay with dynamic setting via DHCP.
