That's all there is too it, really.

Yesterday I went boating for 11 hours in the very hot sun and, not for lack of applying a lot of SPF 30, I have extremely sunburnt lips. I am supposing I did not apply enough sunblock to my face at the crucial time, and the damage was done before I became a lot more vigilant in applying it. I wore more and more as the day went on but obviously the sun was just frazzling the lips that were already burnt. They stung and tingled like mad all afternoon and by the evening I could barely open my mouth.

Anyway, this morning I wake up and my lower lip is swollen to about 3 times its normal size. I've been reading on the Internet about it and people have said that after time the situation just gets worse - scabs, pus, blisters etc etc, and the only advice they have is lip balm. I'm sure you intelligent people can give me more in-depth guidance than that. Is it worth a trip to the doctor? Any over-the-counter medication I can get? I'm in total agony.

Please don't tell me that I need to wear an SPF lipsalve when I go out in the sun next time because I've kind of gathered that. Naively I thought suncream would suffice. I just want to know what I can do about looking like Angelina Jolie after a cat fight.

Hmmm... I'm sorry you are in this predicament!

I'd honestly say that the Chapstick and creams would work.

However, I've read that butter applied to your lips may make you feel a bit better.

Try putting some ice on your lips to just to decrease the pain.

I would recommend seeing a doctor just in case it turns into an infection.

Sorry that it's not much, but I tried. :)

Hope you feel better! :)

Sailing always kills my lips - especially if I'm out for a few days. It goes down in the end - use it as a reminder to put lip protector on next time! (I always forget though ;))

If you're inside (i.e. not sun exposed, and able to re-apply frequently), I find that coconut butter is actually much better than lip balm for healing up your lips. But again, it's not exactly sun protective, and so don't do it unless you're inside, and you'll need to put it on frequently (like hourly or more often). But it's really quite soothing and helps lips heal much more quickly.
