My Macbook stopped booting from the hard drive. I have tried to boot it from the boot CD. It recognized the CD and start booting from the CD. I get the screen with the spinning mouse point. It has been about 1 hour now.

Any advice?

My advice is that your HDD is most likely a goner. You could try removing it and putting it back in, and seeing if that helps. If it doesn't, it's probably shot.

Yes. Very possible the drive is shot. But it could be readable. I've seen several where this is true. Diskwarrior might be able to rebuild the directory enough to get your data off of it.

But, you should probably plan to go ahead and replace it.

I've done a few of these lately. Got the data and user accounts off of most of them (old drive connected via external adapter). Installed new drive and migrated data.
