Unfortunately since Catalina Audiobooks in the Books app are located in: ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.BKAgentService/Data/Documents/iBooks/Books

I have a few that were not bought from Apple.
Is there an intended way to transfer them to a new Mac? Do I just copy the Books folder onto an external SSD and then copy it back on the new Mac? Do I need to export them first and re-import them?

"Do I just copy the Books folder onto an external SSD and then copy it back on the new Mac?"

Seems like this would work just fine.

BUT... you may need to take steps to avoid permissions problems.
Here's how.
a. Copy the files to an external drive or USB flashdrive
b. Connect it to the NEW Mac and let the icon mount on the desktop
c. Click ONE TIME on the icon to select it
d. Bring up the "get info" box for that drive (type "command-i")
e. At the bottom of get info, click the lock and enter your password (the one you are using on the NEW Mac)
f. put a checkmark into "ignore ownership on this volume" (sharing and permissions)
g. close get info.

Now you can copy items from the drive to their proper locations on the new Mac, and the copied files will "fall under the ownership" of your new account.

If you don't take these steps, you might end up with permissions problems when you try to copy or open the files.
