Help transfer files?

So i finally took the plunge and purchased a 13" air yesterday. I am currently transferring files from my old mbp onto an external disk. If i was to use time machine to back it up onto the external. Could i plug the external into the air and pick and choose what i want on it such as certain apps like parallels and office. I cant just completely copy it because i only got the 128 gb ssd in it and i have waayyy more than that on my mbp.
