Help: Upgrade 3.0.1 to Anything?

Hey,

How do I upgrade my iphone from 3.0.1 to 4.0.1 (or anything else)?

I have a 3gs16gb with firmware 4.26.08.

What OS do you recommend upgrading to ? What is the best way to keep contacts, apps, music, and notes?

I tried to search the internet but I was very confused on what to do. My thanks to any help...

If you have the SHSH saved for those firmwares you can upgrade.

www.iclarified.com will have guides. If you're familiar with PwnageTool (Mac only) you can create a custom ipsw keeping current baseband to unlock.

No, PwnageTool is only for mac. Though you can download a custom ipsw from the web.

Look in Cydia, top of the screen will say, "SHSH: iOS....."

First, make sure you have the SHSH saved before upgrading.

Second, your baseband will change to 5.13 (which still can be unlocked).

Third, to jailbreak on 4.0/4.0.1 you need an AT&T sim to activate the iPhone.

If you have 4.0.1 SHSH on cydia, get 4.0.1 ipsw off the internet, start tinyumbrella, run the TSS server and shift+click restore to the 4.0.1 firmware. You'll be on an unlockable baseband and you get to use jailbreakme.com for the easiest jailbreak ever.

Because when you use Tiny Umbrella and start the TSS Server, looks at Cydia for the correct ipsw and not Apple servers, if you dont have the SHSH in cydia it has nothing to point at.

I really don't think it's a good idea for you to JB. You are not ready yet. You don't even know how to back up your phone. PsstGreek gave you a very good site with tutorials but you came back asking for a direct link. You need to read more before JBing.
