I just want to make sure I'm doing this correctly

I have an iPhone 3G with a simunlock chip thing with TMobile service. I want to use yellowsn0w

I currently have 2.1 firmware.

do i update my firmware through iTunes then open quickpwn and follow the prompts. Then i know once its jailbroken with 2.2 i can download yellowsn0w through cydia.
