Help upgrading to iphone before contract is up

I currently do not have an iphone, but was excited to hear about iphone 3gs, and I decided it was time to get one. Being an ATT customer already, I figured I could just extended my contract for another two years, as I thought I had done in past years when I needed/wanted a new phone. I was told at the att store that i could upgrade if i wanted to pay fullprice for the phone ($399) instead of the $199 the phone will be offered for starting friday. I was told the earliest i could upgrade for $199 would be DECEMBER! Anyone have any ideas how I can get the iphone for a better deal?
