Help w/POP Gmail Accounts in Outlook 365

I just recently made the big switch from a Windows to a Mac. I have always worked in Outlook and can't switch because my spouse is in Outlook and sending event invites are a problem. I have loaded Outlook 365 onto the Mac but there seems to be one big issue. Microsoft is telling me that you can't load a pop account into Outlook because Gmail just changed their configurations. I don't know how to even get a hold of gmail to ask these questions. I absolutely need a POP account instead of an IMAP because I travel a lot internationally and I need at least one copy to always be on my Mac when I travel. I use my Iphone and Ipad a lot and on numerous occasions emails get deleted because of IMAP deleting all copies. Is this true? Do you know a work around so I can get POP emails on my Macbook Pro A1990?
