I saw my friends ipod touch and his screen with all his icons and junk had like a space background. How did he do that?

You have to jailbreak your iPod, which means it needs to be either 1.1.1 or 1.1.2, and then download Summerboard or Customize, which both allow for backgrounds on the homescreen.
