Help! why cant i check mail on my iphone? "cannot connect using SSL"

when i click on the little mail icon it brings me to a selection of mailing services,
i then click on gmail and enter in all my account info, when i click "save" a popup screen comes up and says "cannot connect using SSL do you still want to try setting up the account without SSL?" i clicked yes and it wasnt able to set up the account, i then clicked "no" and tried to use the service anyway and it says "cannot get mail the connection to the server "imap.gmail.com" failed."

what is goin on pls help

It happened somegimes to me too,what i did was erase the screenpage,go back to main page and start again. After two or three times it worked out
