A friend gave me his old iBook, so I'm trying now to do a fresh install of 10.4. Unfortunately he doesn't remember the admin password and I can't figure out how to do a full wipe and install without it...

Any suggestions?

You shouldn't need an admin password to wipe the drive. I assume that the installer is asking for the password as soon as you click it, this can be avoided by rebooting while holding Option, then click the CD to boot from it.
