I switched to an iPhone from Android, and I have totally screwed up my pictures trying to get them from Google Photos to Apple Photos. Here's the steps I took to get myself into this mess:

Step 1: Turned on iCloud Library and bought 200 GB storage plan - I had about 5000 photos.

Step 2: Went to Google Drive and downloaded all my photos, and dragged and dropped them into Apple Photos. As they were uploading to the cloud, I noticed a lot were missing. Also, loads of dates are incorrect. It shows my kid's baby pictures for the year 2050 for example.

Step 3: Since I had Back up and sync on my computer, I imported all of them again hoping I'd get the ones I was missing. I didn't. Nothing imported.

Step 4: After a lot of frustration and searching on the web, LIKE AN IDIOT, I went to finder and searched for photos. I dragged and dropped all of them.

So now I have about 14,000 pictures in Photos of literally everything. Such as weird clipart from my computer. And these weird photos where it takes my pictures and it found every face in each one and made an extra photo with a zoomed face. 3 and sometimes 4 duplicates of all my actual photos. After spending lots of time deleting and getting down to 10,000 I realized something. The duplicates have both the original photo, and one with "mini" in the filename with no camera info. Unfortunately for myself I was randomly deleting duplicates without looking at the filename before I happened to figure it out. So now I have some regular and some with those weird file names.

Is there anyway out of this mess?

As I have in the past had bad luck with iCloud, I just left my photos in Google Photos and select Photos in Google Drive.
If you install Google Photos on your iDevice you can have it auto upload to Google.

Still in all, my experience says keep a B/U set in Google.
