We have several Apple TV’s throughout the house. Since the physical Apple TV remote leaves much to be desired, we tend to use the remote app that’s built into the control center of iOS.

it works really well except there’s one bug I can’t seem to figure out. Basically, if you use the remote app to control the Apple TV, from that point on my iPhone is now connected via airplay to that Apple TV. So if I then use my phone to pull up a video or a song on my phone, It airplays it to the Apple TV. And there’s no option to stop airplaying from within the airplay button in control center.

If anyone knows how to disconnect from airplay after using the Apple TV remote app, it would be much appreciated.

Doesn't that lower button allow you re-target the control operations?

What I’m looking to do is not be connected to my tv via airplay any longer.

once I use my phone to control my Apple TV, it’s then connected to my Apple TV via airplay. So if I play a video, podcast, song, etc. it then streams that over my tv via airplay, in turn turning off whatever was playing on the Apple TV (in my case, oftentimes YouTube TV or Netflix)

I hadn't realized using the remote drags airplay along for the ride.
it makes a bit of sense, since the device you selected will then show up on your Lock Screen.

they used to have a stand alone remote app,
if you've had that before, it still works and it doesn't change airplay, but you can no longer add it from the store if you don't have it
I was going to try to add a link to it here, but when you click "share app" nothing happens.

it's the app with the small siri remote picture
There is another app you can still download, it's icon is blue with a triangle, that's not what you want.

you might be able to do it with a shortcut/automation somehow. you can set an airplay target, but it didn't seem to want to send it back to the phone.
I'm not sure what you would trigger the automation with though.

otherwise -

Now I see. You are right - AirPlay connection remains as long as you deactivate it yourself or turn off either of the parties.
You have a long list of AirPlay targets in your Control Centre, but on mine, I still have iPhone as topmost entry and clicking on it breaks the AirPlay connection:
EDIT: I also think that clicking the checkmark on the active target line will also uncheck (deactivate) it in the AirPlay 2 scheme of things.
