Okay, I need your advice. My long-time AirPods 2 have finally reached the end of their life, and it’s time to buy new AirPods. This time, I’m thinking about getting ones with ANC.

My use cases:
  • Listening to music (mostly EDM-type)
  • Watching movies
  • Listening to Brain.fm background music while working in an open office so that my coworkers’ conversations don’t distract me when I need to focus
So, sound quality is important to me. The quality of the ANC is secondary, since I’ve managed just fine in the office with my AirPods 2. However, I’ve often had to turn the volume up higher than I’d like to block out conversations, which isn’t great for my hearing in the long run.

I’m currently considering the following options:

AirPods 4 with ANC.
This would be the safe choice since they’re similar to the AirPods 2, meaning no silicone tips.

AirPods Pro 2.
These apparently have better sound quality and ANC, but I’m unsure about the silicone tips. I once used a cheap pair of wired Sony earbuds with silicone tips, and they felt uncomfortable in my ears.

AirPods Max.
I’m really tempted by these since the sound quality is reportedly amazing, and they’d probably be great for home use. But do your ears get hot or sweaty after wearing them for several hours? And I’m not sure I can justify the price to myself.

I’m 99% sure I want to stick with Apple headphones because I like the ecosystem, Apple’s design, and how seamlessly everything works together. The only alternative I might consider is the Sony XM4, since they supposedly have great sound quality and are now quite affordable. However, I’d find it really annoying if I couldn’t switch seamlessly between my iPhone and Mac.

I’d really appreciate your opinions and experiences with these, especially if you can compare them based on your own use.

And it would be interesting if you could rate these on a scale of 1–10 in terms of sound quality.
