Help with connection to tv

OK... I have connected to my tv in the past, but a while ago. I have the cords , that is not the issue. The issue is when I connect, the only thing I see on the screen is my background. Nothing else. I do remember having to change something, but I dont remember what. What do I need to do?

Under displays in the System Preferences, make sure it's set to mirror your desktop.
