So, I have a gigabyte 1440P Monitor at home. I have had it connected to my MacBook Pro (16" M1 Pro) over the USB C cable. I noticed that certain elements like the number badges on the mail and messages icon. And the stop light buttons on windows were jagged and blurry. I had read that apple dropped support for scaling displays under 4K. But I noticed it got worse the higher in refresh rate I went. So out of pure curiosity I plugged the monitor in via HDMI. And boom, monitor looked great. So I thought it must be an issue with the USB C on the monitor. (also tried a TB4 cable from work, same issue).

Fast forward to this past week. I picked up an M2 MacBook Air. (the pro is a work machine, and I wanted to not have to bring computers back and forth). I thought the easy solution to this would be USB C hub. I got a Caldigit hub on amazon. Plugged it in and was met with the same issue. Odd, so I grabbed my portable USB C hub and tried it, issue went away.

What's going on? Is there certain chipsets in these hubs that work better than others? I really want to use a hub as it allows me to plug in either Mac and use my desk. I'd really like one that I can hide under the desk and just run a cable up. But the only adaptor that seems to work is this portable one I have.

Anyone got any ideas?
