Help with external display MBP & clamshell

Whenever I try to go to clamshell mode, my external HDTV says unsupported VGA mode. It's like the clamshell video output is different from leaving the MBP open, which works fine.

Seems if I use 1440 in "open" notebook mode, why would it switch to an unsupported resolution in clamshell.

My ext HDTV is a little finicky about which VGA modes it supports.
