I have an OS10.4.11. I've been using a Toshiba 2TB external hard drive for my music library. Recently iTunes couldn't find a wav track on the external drive. When I looked for it manually, it had become a UNIX executable file (?!). I couldn't fix it so I tried to delete it (and reload from my back-up drive). But it wouldn't let me delete it (the file would move to the trash, but a new one would reappear in its place). I decided to delete the entire folder, but I couldn't empty the trash because it said the file was in use. I decided to use the "find file" option, and then try to delete from this screen (as this had worked on other problems in the past), but when I tried, the Hard Disc and the external hard disk started flashing on and off the screen, and I couldn't do anything, the computer was essentially frozen.
I unplugged the external hard drive and the Mac works fine. I plugged the external drive into my Windows computer and it works fine, but when I plug it back in to my Mac (or another Mac) - the flashing and freezing begins again. What did I do wrong, and how do I fix it? There must be something I can do to stop this process, that seems like it's some sort of runaway process you might see on a PC.
