Help with IoS upgrade and Phone flickering

Need your help a little bit.

Firstly, its jailbroken and unlocked fine.

Issues:
1) My iphone flickers a lot (Version: 4.0(8A293)); Modem :5.13.04, BB:.
2) I have tried multiple attempts to upgrade my IoS version using iTunes but fails with an error. I have tried redSnow 0.9.6b5, everything seems to go fine, but my IoS version is never upgraded to 4.2. Tried from 3 different machines.

Please help if you can.
