help with iphone 3g Charging problems

hey guys i recently bought a iphone 3g , went to charge whist it was turnt on but it dosnt display its charging? but when turned off and the batterys low and you plug it in it shows a picture of a battery nearly empty in the red but doesnt progress up the battery.... But if i leave it over night to charge it still displays the battery low i then turn it on it shows the battery being full in the top right? my iphone also doesnt reconise itunes?

any ideas please thanks scott:rolleyes:
