I have a iphone 3g 16gb white version

its got 2.2.1 (5H11) - model MB499LL - modem firmware 02.30.03

it is old and I would like to get it up to date, I dont care much about ios 4, it wont work to good on a 3g anyways

but I need to use Skype and it wont install on my other 3g thats got 3.1.3 because its not 4.0

whats the best way to go about getting this up to date

go strait to 3.1.3?

should I backup something that is needed for updating? some sorta file thats needed but is gone or something after you update - I am not sure ahts its called but I remember that a year ago or so there was some sorta update that if you didnt first backup something you couldnt unlock it or something like that - someone knows what I am talking about
