I have a 2010 Ford F-150 with the Sync system and an iphone 4 running 4.2.1. When It's connected via bluetooth, it's like my phone has been muted so my text message alert tone doesn't play, it just vibrates. Phone calls and everything else works fine through the bluetooth connection. I'm missing all my text messages while in the car which is fine while driving but not cool when I am parked or in a drive through line etc. Any ideas?

I don't think it has anything to do with your car being a Ford or the Sync system. (I work in the car business and see this with pretty much every car)

When your phone is connected via BT the phone sees that as its Audio output source. The car however only sees the phone when a incoming call signal is sent to the car which then makes the BT connection (ie Ringer and number)

Try this. Lock your phone and double tap the home button to bring the ipod controls up. Press play and you should see the BT symbol next to the volume slider. Click it and then change the audio source to speaker.

You should then hear alerts and keyboard clicks on the phone. The downside, I'm pretty sure you're not going to have a call pushed through the BT for the car.

The exception to the rule is the cars that now support streaming BT Audio. When that is playing the BT connection remains open and the phone will send all sounds through the cars audio system.

I don't care if the text message alerts are played through the phone or through the vehicle speakers, as long as it's played somewhere. Right now it doesn't play at all. Unless I feel or hear it vibrate I have no idea I received a text. This is a problem for me because my phone is my pager also and hospitals text me.
