Hello good people,

My 2010 MBP is still alive and kicking, but I am going to want to upgrade it soon. I am a very casual user, and I use the machine for personal files, media consumption, photo management, music, and email. I use cloud and external drive backups, but still consider onboard storage to be important.

In short, not sure what to do. I am hesitant to buy a 2018 MB or MBP, and am torn between getting something now, waiting for 2019 updates, or to buy a Windows machine (Surface Go, Pro, etc...).

I am guilty of spending in order to future proof (MBP 2010 still going!) and so that I can have a nice form factor. In terms of Apple ecosystem, I do like IOS, I also like Windows 10. I am invested in IPad, IPhone, Time Capsule, and Apple TV. Not that much $$ invested in apps. I do need something that will organize photos good.

Any advice on what to get and when to get it? Any advice appreciated!

Thanks!

You might want to check out the Apple on line refurbished store to see if they have something that you like there. You can usually save around 15% and receive the full one year Apple warranty with every purchase. You can also add Apple Care. The refurb units sold by Apple are like brand new and some of them in fact are new. Just a suggestion.

Yes definitely a thought. When I bought my MBP (and my wife’s MB) I bought the last iteration rather than the latest and greatest- saved some coin that way. Still unsure what machine to get though...

get a laptop that can be repaired, upgraded and looks appealing.
cuz, some lady's kid 2017 MBP battery is swelling, and is kinda at apples repair mercy.

Go with a new 2018 model. This is probably the largest jump in performance in quite some time (on both 13 and 15 inch models) by adding 4core and 6 core processors. At this point, unless you needed legacy ports (in which case you would shop for a used 2015 model) the 2017 model doesn't look very attractive.

If future proofing is something that you're concerned with, the 2018 models are going to be your safest bet.

Some specials on 2017 & 2018 MBPs going on at BH at the moment- Good savings potential.

Still not sure whether to pull the trigger. September will surely bring some new announcements. I'm admittedly skittish of the keyboard, and still not sure whether to go with a Mac or a Surface Pro. My main concern is simply photo management (currently on Photos). Otherwise don't really need super performance, but do want some speed and to keep machine for a while.

Being that you're a casual user, if you can get a good deal on a 2017 go for it. You won't be disappointed. But if its only $200-$300 in savings, splurge on the newer model.
