I've been having a lot of issues with my iPhone for a while now with the location services function.
I've had the phone for about a year and a half now, and for a while it was running just fine. But around late January to mid February, I started having these problems. This isn't something that got progressively worse over the course of weeks or months, this is something that pretty much happened overnight.
Any time I try to run an application that uses the location services, primarily google maps, all the other services have it turned on, when I run the application the phone slows down to a crawl. When I try to type in an address, I can get one letter typed before the phone freezes up, sitting there for about five or ten minutes before I can get the next letter in. Basically to search for any directions, I have to type in the address with the location services off, bookmark it, go back and turn the services back on before I can get the directions. And even then it will take about ten minutes before the phone actually starts tracking my movements. All the while this is going on, the phone gets very very hot.
Other applications with location services run equally as slow with the services for those apps turned on. Pretty much opening gmaps will brick my phone for about the next ten to fifteen minutes.
This isn't a question of the phone unable to get a GPS signal, as it happens if I'm in areas with open skies, not to mention that a year ago it would work just fine in the same areas.
Are there any settings or something that got changed that could be unnecessarily slowing the phone down? Are there ways to speed up this functionality back to the way it was? Or is something in the phone physically broken and just one more nail in the coffin to send me to HTC when my contract with AT&T expires in a few months? The Apple website is no help, as it's telling me I have to pay for a service call to get any help.
It's a non-jailbroken iPhone 3G running software 4.2.1. Please let me know if there's additional info that would help the problem or things that I could do to help (besides just telling me to jailbreak the phone).
