Help with macbook pro 13" to 23" monitor

I hook up my macbook pro through mini -> dvi -> monitor using dual displays, I make my 23" the main monitor and shut my macbook pro and insert a usb to wake it up but everytime I wake up my macbook pro and disconnect it from the 23" the windows are all messed up and when I connect it back to the 23" the windows are too small, is there a solution to this?
