Okay, so I'm trying to set up my school email address in Mail, but I'm having some issues. I got it working fine in Entourage, but I plan on getting rid of Microsoft Office very soon, and this is the only thing that's keeping me from doing that.

Here are a few screenshots of my settings in entourage. Hope they can help you help me.

So, what is the problem? If you want our help please post the problem and description of computer. We can help, just present your problem please.

Sorry, I guess I should have been more specific. Well, baisically, when I create a new account, Mail says that it can't connect to the server. I've contacted my school's help desk, and they have no idea, since they don't support Mac.

Can you show us a screenshot of how you've set things up in Mail?

Not an Exchange expert here, but it looks to me like you should have "mail.metcenter.org" in the Incoming Mail Server field. And I guess you should have "www.metcenter.org/exchange" in the Outlook Web Access Server field.

Okay, I just changed the settings to what you suggested. It loaded for a while, then an error came up:

There may be a problem with the mail server or network. Check the settings for account "metcenter" or try again.

The server error encountered was: The connection to the server "mail.metcenter.org" on port 143 timed out.

yeah, try flipping the two fields and if that does not work in the top field enter mail.metcenter.org and have the www.metcenter.org/exchange in the web mail one.

That sounds like a server side error...can you still access things just fine through Entourage? If so, you're out of my league now and you'll need someone with more knowledge that me (fortunately that's not saying much) to help you out.

Works fine in Entourage, and when I log on in a web browser.

if the exchange server has IMAP set up you could use IMAP instead.

EDIT:
Also one thing to try is make sure IMAP is set up on the server when trying to set it up as an exchange account. Apparently mail needs IMAP running on the exchange server for this to work as MS uses a propriety protocol. ;)

I'm trying now.

Aaannnd.......

......it's taking forever but it seems to be doing something.

Still no luck. I get the "not responding error".

EDIT: I'm on the phone with Apple Tech Support right now. Maybe I'll get some help there.

EDIT 2: Just got off the phone with Tech Support. Appearently it's a blocked port. If I need any more help I will post again.

Arrg! Still no luck. Well, I'm giving up for now.
The thing that you need to understand is that you are trying to connect to an Exchange server. No two implementations of Exchange are the same. Many firms which provide web access do so because they have disabled mail client access outside the LAN. OTOH, Entourage 2004's and Mail's Exchange settings require the web client to be enabled. It may be possible to access the server via IMAP but that is by no means guaranteed.

The takeaway message here is that Exchange is not usually setup to make it easy to logically deduce its settings. Outlook (for Windows) tends to automagically discover your settings fairly easily. Find a Windows machine with a functioning Outlook setup for this server and clone them. If that fails, you may also contact your IT staff.

Mail.app Exchange settings

I have Entourage working fine on the Exchange server, but I'd rather use Mail. The terminology between the two apps varies and I can't duplicate my Entourage settings. Can anyone help with this?

For example:

Entourage has the following fields:
Account ID
Domain
Password
Exchange server
Public folders server
LDAP server

Mail has these fields:
Description
Email Address
Full Name
Incoming Mail Server
User Name
Password
Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)
Outlook Web Access Server
IMAP Path Prefix

So here's what I think I know;
Account ID = User Name
Domain = ???????
Password = duh...password
Exchange Server = ???????
Public folders server = ?????????
LDAP server = ?????????

If anyone could shed some light on this I'd appreciate it.

....
Mail has Exchange settings similar to Entourage 2004. You may use the account wizard to setup your Exchange account. If it works, it probably works better Entourage. If not, then you can setup an IMAP account to access your Exchange server. In either case, you use the same URL. But, I cannot emphasize this enough--Microsoft does not intend for this to be easy. You have to be willing to experiment with your specific server.
