I am new to the Apple world and I am going to get MSFS as soon as I figure something out. It appears that I can buy the game outright or join Game Pass. I do not know how Steam enters into the picture. I don't want to play any other games and I don't want to play with friends. Can someone please explain the relationship with Steam.

Steam is a digital store to buy and manage your games. Kind of like iTunes is for music. Steam will let you redownload your game, do cloud saves, chat with friends, etc. If you're buying MSFS and want to play on Mac you'll need Steam because the only other place to buy it is the Microsoft Store which will only run on Windows.

Keep in mind MSFS is only for Windows and Xbox so you'll need some sort of tool like Whiskey or Crossover to play on Mac if you buy it outright.

Currently with PC Game Pass you have to use the Xbox Windows app to access games, which means playing on Mac is impossible, because wine/crossover does not support the Xbox app.

Microsoft also made their games available on Steam, and if you purchase MSFS on Steam, it might be possible to play on Mac with Steam and crossover.

That's true. Although with Game Pass Ultimate you can stream the Xbox version on a web browser.

Thanks for all the help so far. However this post is located in the console games section because I am trying to play it on Xbox.

Well then you don't need Steam. That's only for computers. Just buy it off the Xbox store or sign up for Game Pass.

Think Netflix for games. You can play a bunch of games you don't own for a subscription fee. Also let's you play online with other people and stream games as mentioned.
Thanks for that info. Since I don't want to play other games and I want to play alone it sounds like I don't need Game Pass.

Steam is just a store and gaming lounge. If you buy MSFS on Steam, the game will be installed and run through its client. Game Pass is a subscription to the Microsoft Store through the Xbox App. Steam and Game Pass are different ways of purchasing, they are not related.
